Cavs Athletics 7th Overall and 4th in Women in VA SID All-Sports College Division Survey

Newport News, VA – The University of Virginia’s College at Wise completed one of its most successful athletic campaigns this past year. The Highland Cavaliers earned a seventh place finish overall and a fourth placing by the women’s teams in the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association All-Sports College Division Survey for the 2005-06 year. The survey included all non NCAA Division I schools in the state.
UVa-Wise moved up the Virginia college ranks eight spots overall from 15th for the 2004-05 campaign to seventh this year of 27 colleges. The survey is determined by winning percentage of all of each college’s athletic events. The Cavs finished 141-96 for a solid .595 overall winning percentage for seventh place. Virginia Wesleyan won the overall rankings for the second time in three years with a .713 winning percentage (220-88-2). Christopher Newport was second (.673) and was followed by Mary Washington (.654), Washington & Lee (.650), Bridgewater (.645) and Hampden-Sydney (.619) rounding out the colleges ahead of UVa-Wise.
The Lady Cavs teams completed an outstanding year which included three Appalachian Athletic Conference titles from the basketball (24-10), tennis (15-5) and softball (35-16) squads along with a strong 17-9 mark in volleyball. UVa-Wise compiled a 91-40 record for the women’s teams for a .695 winning percentage for fourth place of 26 Virginia colleges. Washington & Lee won the women’s winning percentage at .757 (125-39-3) with Virginia Wesleyan (.715) and Christopher Newport (.713) closely just above UVa-Wise. The Lady Cavs moved up to their fourth place rating after logging a seventh place spot a year ago.
On the men’s side, UVa-Wise showed a marked improvement in the 23 college field as well. The Cavs took 22nd last year before climbing to 14th of the 23 men’s colleges. UVa-Wise recorded a 50-56 record and .472 winning percentage for the football, basketball, tennis and baseball teams combined up from only a .287 percentage (27-67) from the previous year, a 23-win improvement. Overall, the UVa-Wise teams received a 10-game improvement from basketball, seven more wins out of the baseball program and one additional victory on the gridiron. Virginia Wesleyan claimed the men’s title with a .711 percentage (94-38-1) with Mary Washington (.627) and Hampden-Sydney (.619) completing the top three.
