UVa-Wise Softball Bats Come Alive at Cumberlands

March 7, 2006

Williamsburg, KY – After struggling at the plate the first part of the year, the Lady Cavs saw their bats come alive Tuesday afternoon. The University of Virginia’s College at Wise recorded its first softball sweep of the year, 10-5 and 9-2, over The University of the Cumberlands behind a 25-hit effort.

UVa-Wise (4-7) put away the first game early. The Lady Cavs could not be stopped in the first three frames. Britney Lawson led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and saw both Shelley Newton and Krystal Showers slashed hits to get the five-run turn at the plate started. The Patriots (7-9) answered with three tallies of their own in the bottom of the first only to see the visitors push across two in the second and three in the third for a 10-3 score. Cumberlands added two in the fourth but was all the closer it came for the 10-5 final.

Leading 2-1 after five innings, the Lady Cavs lined five straight hits from Amber Quillen, Mallory Mazur, Dani Benton, Lawson and Sarah Frazier to go ahead 6-1. Uva-Wise added three more scores in the seventh before taking home the 9-2 win.

Lawson accounted for one fourth of the team’s hits with six including two two-baggers. Newton added four hits with a solo home run in game two and a double in the opener. Showers had two doubles and three hits in the first contest. Mary Wilson belted her first collegiate homer in the top of the seventh of the nightcap to go with two other hits in the first game. Mazur and Alicia King recorded three hits each in the second game with a double for Mazur.

Benton went the opening four innings on the mound for the game one win while Michelle Osborne finished the final three frames. Mazur continued her solid pitching with six strikeouts while allowing three hits over seven innings in the second affair.

UVa-Wise will now be off until the weekend when they will take part in the NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic in LaGrange, GA.
