Lady Cav Softball Blanks Two, Falls in Extra Frames
March 10, 2006
LaGrange, GA - The tough schedule continued for The University of Virginia's College at Wise on Friday at the prestigous NAIA Leadoff Classic. The Lady Cavs continued to grow and blanked both Spring Hill (AL) College, 3-0, and Columbia (MO) College, 2-0, before falling, 1-0, in eight innings to St. Gregory's (OK).
The duo of Shelley Newton and Krystal Showers paced UVa-Wise (6-8) in the first contest. Both Lady Cavs lined three hits while Showers belted a solo homer in the third and Newton a double. Dani Benton and Britney Lawson accounted for the other two hits against Spring Hill (5-6). Mallory Mazur recorded her first collegiate shutout on the mound.
Benton continued the solid pitching in the second contest of the day. Benton allowed only two hits for her shutout of Columbia (4-6). Offensively, UVa-Wise took advantage of two key Columbia errors. In the first, Newton walked and scored on a right field miscue. The tally stayed 1-0 until Charity Gilliam walked and came home on another Cougar error in the bottom of the sixth for what would be the 2-0 final. Newton had a double and Alicia King a single for the Lady Cavs.
After seven and 1/2 scoreless innings, St. Gregory's (15-6) was able to push across the deciding score in the bottom of the eighth. Amanda Wheeler had a strong performance for the Lady Cavs on the mound. Wheeler allowed five hits, no earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts over 7.2 frames. UVa-Wise managed just two singles in the game from Benton and Showers.
The second day of opponents will be determined very late Friday night.
