Lady Cav Softball Wins One of Three Single Run Contests

LaGrange, GA - The Lady Cavs were able to pull out only one of three one-run softball games on Saturday at the second day of the NAIA Leadoff Classic. The University of Virginia's College at Wise was shutout by Tiffin (OH), 1-0, before defeating Oklahoma Christian, 3-2. William Woods (MO) completed UVa-Wise's day by taking a 3-2 decision in the Silver Bracket Consolation game.

UVa-Wise (7-10) outhit Tiffin (6-2) 6-3 in the first contest. The only difference was Tracy Lehman's two out double that scored Stephanie Orr in the top of the sixth. The Lady Cavs could not score in their final two trips for the 1-0 final.

Mallory Mazur (2-4) struck out six while allowing only three hits to take the loss. Six different Lady Cavs had hits of Dani Benton, Shelley Newton, Krystal Showers, Mary Wilson, Mazur and Charity Gilliam.

UVa-Wise came back to turn the tables in its second game. The Lady Cavs posted single tallies in the first two innings and the deciding score in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-2 victory over Oklahoma Christian (5-11). Britney Lawson lined three hits while both Benton and Amber Quillen had two. Newton had the only extra base hit with a double. Amanda Wheeler picked up her first win (1-2) of the year while Mazur had the save.

William Woods (11-5) took the lead and did not give it up in the Silver Bracket Consolation game. The Owls scored twice in the first and added a single tally in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. UVa-Wise was able to score two runs in the top of the sixth but no more to lose 3-2.

Newton had her second double of the day while Benton, Addington and Sarah Frazier added other hits.

UVa-Wise will now be off for nine days when they play at Pikeville College on March 20th.
