Lady Cav Hang On in Rainy Softball Win at Pikeville

Pikeville, KY – After jumping out to an 8-2 lead, the Lady Cavs were able to hold on for a rainy softball victory over the Lady Bears on Monday afternoon. The University of Virginia’s College at Wise took its first game in over a week by an 8-6 final before the second game of the doubleheader at Pikeville was called due to the wet weather.
UVa-Wise (8-10) received two hits a piece from Britney Lawson, Mary Wilson and Ashley Addington. Wilson tripled and Lawson doubled for the team’s two extra base hits. Dani Benton went the distance on the mound to improve to 5-4 and struck out five batters.
The Lady Cavs scored an unearned run in the second before posting its big inning in the third. Sarah Frazier, who had a leadoff single, was doubled home by Lawson. Krystal Showers lined an rbi single to plate Lawson with the second run. Two batters later, Alicia King reached on an error which scored both Showers and Wilson to go ahead 5-0.
Pikeville (3-8) plated a run in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Benton and Shelley Newton singled to lead off the Lady Cav trip to the plate. Showers popped out before Wilson sliced a two-run triple. She would later come home on a Addington single for an 8-1 lead.
The Lady Bears scored two unearned runs after a Lady Cav error when Casey Walker doubled in the sixth. The first two hitters recorded hits and scored in the bottom of the seventh but could get no closer for the 8-6 final.
UVa-Wise will open Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Thursday afternoon when they host Virginia Intermont for a 1:00 p.m. twinbill.
