Mazur's Three-Hitter and Hill's Power Gives UVa-Wise Softball Split at Milligan

April 11, 2006

Milligan College, TN -- Mallory Mazur fired a three-hitter to give UVa-Wise softball a split of the twinbill at Milligan College on Tuesday. After being upset 5-3 in the opener, the Lady Cavs' Mazur fanned nine Lady Buffs on the way to an 8-0 win in the latter contest.

The UVa-Wise split is a costly one as the team now falls two games behind Tennessee Wesleyan (11-1) in the Appalachian Athletic Conference standings with an 8-2 mark. The Lady Cavs sit at 20-12 on the year. Milligan goes to 12-16-1 on the year and an even 6-6 for the season.

Terri Ann Hill had the big day at the plate for UVa-Wise. Hill went four for seven with a two-run double and solo home run. Alicia King lined three hits of her own and drove in two runs. Krystal Showers continued her hot streak as the senior had four singles and two rbi. Mazur (7-6) held the Lady Cavs in the game on the mound in the opener before firing her three-hitter in the second affair.

In the opener, Hill lined a two-run double after Mary Wilson reached on a fielder's choice and King singled for a 2-0 score in the second. In the bottom of the frame, Milligan lofted a sac fly to edge back 2-1. Britney Lawson sliced a leadoff two-bagger and came home on a run-scoring single from Showers to make it 3-1. The Lady Buffs answered the visitor's run. Milligan took advantage of a walk and hit batter but a Dowdy double tied the game, 3-3. The home team powered ahead in the bottom of the fourth with a double and three singles to score two times for what would be a 5-3 final.

Hill opened the scoring for UVa-Wise in the second game as well. She belted her first homer in the top of the second. King lined a two-run single in the top of the fourth before the Lady Cavs took advantage of two Lady Buffs errors for two more runs and a 5-0 score. Sarah Stone hit a sac fly to bring home Hill, who doubled, in the fifth before Showers had a two rbi single in the sixth for what would be an 8-0 final.

UVa-Wise will be back in action for the third day in a row when they host Bluefield College in a makeup from Saturday's rainout starting at 2:00 p.m.
