UVa-Wise Wins Two Softball Games from Bluefield
April 12, 2006
Wise, VA -- After breezing to a game one win, the Lady Cavs needed an eighth inning single by Mary Wilson to score the game-winner run in the nightcap. Shelley Newton drove in three runs on three hits as UVa-Wise beat Bluefield, 9-1, in five innings but Wilson's hit gave the home team a 2-1 victory in the second game.
UVa-Wise pulled back to within one game in the Appalachian Athletic Conference standings with the sweep. The Lady Cavs are now 10-2 while Tennessee Wesleyan is atop the league with an 11-1 mark. UVa-Wise is now 22-12 overall while Bluefield fell to 1-19 and 1-13 in the league.
Wilson and Alicia King were the big hitters of the day for UVa-Wise. Wilson went four for seven with the game-winning single in game two. King lined four hits in five at bats with a triple in game two and one rbi. Shelley Newton went three for four in the opener with a double, two runs scored and three rbi. Krystal Showers was the other triple hit performer with a three for five day, two runs, two rbi and two stolen bases. Amanda Wheeler (3-2) gave up four hits and one run for the run-rule shortened opening win. Mallory Mazur (8-5) fired a perfect three innings of relief not allowing a hit while striking out six and walking two for the mound victory in the second affair.
After a bases loaded walk to Terri Ann Hill in the first inning, the Lady Cavs put together three-straight scoring frames starting in the third. Newton, King and Wilson recorded run-scoring singled and final score came on a passed ball for a 4-0 score. Bluefield's Lauren Shepard homered in the top of the fourth for its run in the game. Newton and Hill laced rbi doubles and Showers a run-producing single for an 8-1 tally after four frames. The Lady Cavs scored an unearned run on a Lady Rams error in the fifth to reach the eight-run rule score of 9-1.
Bluefield produced an unearned run in the top of the second when Mallory Hart singled through the right side for a 1-0 lead. The score remained until the bottom of the sixth. King tripled into the right field corner and came home on a Showers single past the Lady Ram shortstop to tie the game 1-1. The game went to extra innings where UVa-Wise loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, Wilson was able to loft the ball just over the visiting short stop into left field to score Mazur with the game-winning run for the 2-1 final.
UVa-Wise will complete its tough four-straight days of playing twinbills on Thursday with a pair of contests at Concord College.
