April 13, 2006
Athens, WV -- Playing for the fourth day in a row, UVa-Wise earned a softball split with NCAA DII Concord College on Thursday. The Lady Cavs claimed a 5-2 victory in the opener before the Lady Lions answered with a 5-3 win in the second affair.
UVa-Wise (23-13) posted a three-run second frame behind a two-run double by Mary Wilson, who scored the third run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Sarah Stone. The visitors added a pair of insurance tallies in the fifth to take a 5-2 first game win. Wilson and Alicia King lined doubles while Dani Benton, Shelley Newton and King had two hits in the game.
Concord (10-22) recorded a single run in the first and a pair in both the third and fourth innings for a 5-0 advantage in game two. The Lady Lions took advantage of four Lady Cavs errors and Ashley Jackson's second home run of the day. UVa-Wise broke onto the scoreboard with a run in the sixth and two tallies in the seventh but could not get any closer for a 5-3 defeat.
UVa-Wise will take a well needed rest before hosting the University of the Cumberlands next Tuesday starting at 2:00 p.m.
