Lady Cavs Split with Wasps

Emory, VA – After a tough weekend against NCAA Division II competition, the Lady Cavs earned a softball split at Emory & Henry College on Wednesday. The University of Virginia’s College at Wise suffered its third shutout, 1-0, in the opener before taking a close 3-1 contest in the latter affair.
Shannon Harris dominated UVa-Wise (1-4) on the mound in the first contest. The Wasp hurler fanned 11 batters and scattered three hits. Amy Rich singled down the right field line to score pinch runner Laura Hudson for the lone score in the bottom of the seventh to take away the 1-0 win.
Dani Benton, Shelley Newton and Amber Quillen lined base hits for the Lady Cavs. Freshman Mallory had a solid outing on the hill where she allowed three hits, walked one and stuck out two but took the loss.
UVa-Wise was able to post single runs in the third, fourth and six frames to earn the second game victory. Alicia King doubled to left center to drive in Sarah Frazier, who walked and stole second, for the third inning score.
Krystal Showers was the catalyst for the other two Lady Cav scores. She led off the fourth and sixth with a singles and stolen bases of second in both frames. Britney Lawson ground out to score Showers in the fourth and Mary Wilson tripled down the right field line in the sixth for the other tally. Emory & Henry (2-4-1) posted its lone run in the fourth on three hits.
Newton, Showers and King all three recorded a pair of hits. Benton earned the team’s first mound victory covering the first four frames allowing four hits, one run, a walk and four strikeouts. Amanda Wheeler three a scoreless final three innings with three hits and one strikeout to pick up the save.
UVa-Wise will return to action on Friday and Saturday at the Tennessee Wesleyan Classic.
