Bristol, TN -- UVa-Wise finished off its Appalachian Athletic Conference softball season in solid fashion. The Lady Cavs scored four times in both ends of the doubleheader to defeat the Tornados by tallies of 4-0 and 4-1 in the key showdown.
The sweep sealed no less than second place in the regular season for UVa-Wise. The visitors took their conference mark to 14-2 and 29-13 overall. Tennessee Wesleyan sits first at 13-1 in the league but have to travel to King (12-8/9-3 AAC) on Tuesday afternoon to complete its conference docket.
Krystal Showers had the top bat for the Lady Cavs in the two games. Showers produced three singles and drove in a trio of runs. Newton laced a double, single and had three rbi. Britney Lawson scored three times while slicing two hits including a triple. Ashley Addington was the other double hit person on the day. Amanda Wheeler (4-2) recorded her first shutout of the year as she allowed only four hits, walked one and fanned three. Dani Benton (13-5) gave up one hit over four frames and struck out three batters while Mallory Mazur picked up her second save of the year pitching the final three innings.
In the opener, Addington lined a run-scoring single to plate the first run in the top of the second. The Lady Cavs pushed across three tallies in the third when they took advantage of two Tornados miscues and received a two-run single from Showers to make it 4-0. Wheeler took care of the rest and shutdown King the rest of the way for the shutout.
Another King error enabled Lawson to reach base and later score on a Showers hit in the first frame. Lawson tripled to lead off the third and came home on a Newton sac fly to go up 2-0. UVa-Wise added two unearned insurance runs in the top of the fifth. A leadoff walk helped King score its lone run of the day in the bottom of the seventh but could not muster any more runs to fall 4-1 in the second contest.
UVa-Wise will travel to Georgetown College on Tuesday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. twinbill before hosting Alice Lloyd College for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
