Lady Cavs Roll in Opener, Comeback Falls Short in Second

Beckley, WV – UVa-Wise exploded for nine runs combined in two late innings to roll over Mountain State in the opener before its comeback fell one tally short in the second game Sunday. The Lady Cavs received a one-hitter from Dani Benton on the mound and the hitters had 11 hits for a 9-0 six inning victory before Shelley Newton’s two-run homer in the top of the seventh was one run short, 6-5, in the late game.
UVa-Wise finishes its regular season at 30-14, its second year in a row with at least 30 victories. The Lady Cavs will now move onto the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament starting on Tuesday. They will face Montreat College in the opening round for an 11:00 a.m. Tuesday game at Bristol’s Whitetop Creek Park and Sports Complex.
In the twinbill, Krystal Showers and Alicia King lined four hits apiece. Showers had a double and two rbi while King score three times and drove in three runs. Britney Lawson added three hits, two tallies and two stolen bases. Newton drove in four runs on three hits with a two-run homer on the afternoon. Benton contributed a double on one of her two hits while both Sarah Stone and Terri Ann Hill recorded two hits as well. Benton posted her fifth shutout of the year and 10 th scoreless inning of the week to take her mark to 14-5.
In a scoreless game, Benton and Newton walked to start the top of the fourth. Showers singled in Benton before scoring herself on a King single. King eventually came home with the third run on a Mountain State error for a 3-0 score. The score remained until King drove home Hill to start a big six-run sixth frame. UVa-Wise had scoring hits in the at bat from a Mary Wilson double and rbi singles from Amber Quillen, Lawson and Newton. Showers rounded out the tallies with a double to make take the game to the final score of 9-0.
Trailing 6-3 in the top of the seventh, Benton singled to leadoff the Lady Cavs’ trip to the plate. Two outs later, Newton belted her fourth home run to make it 6-5. Showers followed with a single but the Lady Cougars were able to have King ground out to third to end the game at a 6-5 score.
