Bristol, TN -- A Sarah Stone two-run pinch hit single and a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth of the late game gave UVa-Wise a sweep in softball. The Stone single keyed a four-run fifth to help the Lady Cavs defeat Montreat, 4-1, before the team scored the winning run, 2-1, on a Brevard error in the night cap of the Appalachian Athletic Conference playoffs.

UVa-Wise (32-14) moves into the AAC winners bracket championship contest. The Lady Cavs will face the winner of the Tennessee Wesleyan and Milligan game which started after 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night. The game will start Thursday night at approximately 7:00 p.m. at White Top Creek Park in Bristol, TN.

In the Montreat contest, Alicia King and Amber Quillen had two of the team's seven hits with King have a double. Britney Lawson had a rbi double with Stone lining a two-run single and Dani Benton a run-scoring single. Amanda Wheeler pitched the first four frames before Mallory Mazur (11-6) finished the last three innings to pick up the win. Against Brevard, Shelley Newton tripled and Ashley Addington had two hits. Benton and Stone produced one single apiece. Benton went the distance on the mound to improve to 15-5. She allowed seven hits in nine innings.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, King doubled to right center to lead off the trip to the plate. Mary Wilson walked to follow and both runners moved 60 feet on a third strike wild pitch. Two batters later, Stone pitch hit for Michelle Osborne and drove in both King and Wilson with a solid hit up the middle. Lawson smashed a two-bagger to right center to plate Stone. Benton stroked a single up the middle to bring home Lawson with the fourth score to lead 4-1. Mazur allowed just one hit in the final two innings while fanning three batters in the time.

UVa-Wise moved on in the winners bracket against Brevard College. The two teams played the first seventh innings without a single run crossing the plate. After one scoreless extra inning, Brevard broke onto the scoreboard.

The Lady Tornado produced back-to-back doubles to score the first run in the top of the ninth. In the home half of the ninth, Newton led off with a triple to right. Krystal Showers walked next before King ground out to score Newton and tie the game, 1-1. Wilson stepped to the plate and ground out to third to move Showers to third base. Brevard misplayed Quillen's hit as the next batter to allow Showers to score the winning run for a 2-1 final.
