Lady Cav Softball Run-Rule Brescia but Fall in 9 Innings to Bethel

Owensboro, KY -- After the Wednesday washout of the NAIA Region XII tournament, the UVa-Wise softball team started Thursday by run-ruling Brescia College, 8-0 in five innings, before Bethel College (TN) plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth frame to take the winner's bracket final, 8-6.
The Lady Cavs (35-15) will now move into Friday's 11:00 a.m. loser's bracket final. UVa-Wise will play the winner of the Tennessee Wesleyan/Mid-Continent which will take place at 9:00 a.m. to start the day. The loser's bracket final winner will move into the championship against Bethel College (31-14) starting at 1:00 p.m. with a rematch to played immediately at 3:00 p.m. if neccessary.
On the day, Amber Quillen recorded five hits with a double. Ashley Addington had a pair of singles in both games. Britney Lawson slice a double and had three rbi in the opener and followed with a grand slam home run in the late game. Krystal Showers belted two solo homers against Bethel. Dani Benton and Shelley Newton posted two singles apiece in the first game.
Leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, UVa-Wise plated three runs. The team added the deciding five runs need to run-rule Brescia in the bottom half of the fifth for the 8-0 victory.
After a scoreless first, Lawson blasted a grand slam home run, her first of the year, in the top of the second for a 4-0 lead. Bethel pushed across one tally in the bottom of the second. Showers connected for solo homers in both the fifth and seventh innings to give UVa-Wise a 6-1 advantage. The Lady Wildcats mounted a big five-run comeback off with four scores coming unearned from two Lady Cav miscues. In the bottom of the ninth, Bethel received a double with one out before connecting for a two-run homer for the 8-6 win.
