Lady Cavs Blanked in Two Close Games to Open Tn. Wesleyan Classic

Athens, TN -- The first day of the Tennessee Wesleyan Classic produced two close games but two defeats for the Lady Cavs. UVa-Wise dropped a 1-0 affair to 10th-ranked Lee University and fell by a 2-0 tally to host Tennessee Wesleyan.
Mallory Mazur proved to be a strong effort on the mound in the opener. The freshman scattered seven hits and one run while fanning six. The lone score of the game came in the bottom of the third. Maranda Mounce singled and scored on a double from JaAndrea Hinton for the Lee (6-2) tally.
UVa-Wise (1-6) received hits from Britney Lawson, Mazur and Sarah Frazier.
The third frame proved to be the downfall for the second time on the day for the Lady Cavs. After a walk to Kelli Carlton, Tennessee Wesleyan's Leslie Vess reached on an error to centerfield to score the runner. Crystal Peterson followed Vess with a run-scoring triple for a 2-0 lead. UVa-Wise could not amount more than two hits from Mary Wilson. Dani Benton and Amanda Wheeler pitched well as the duo allowed only three hits, walked two and struck out four.
UVa-Wise will complete the two-day classic with rematches against both teams on Saturday.
