King and Mazur Earns NAIA Region XII and AAC Players of the Week Acclaim

Wise, VA -- UVa-Wise's Alicia King and Mallory Mazur earned NAIA Region XII and Appalachian Athletic Conference softball Players of the Week acclaim. First baseman King was the Player of the Week while Mazur picked up her first college honor as the Pitcher of the Week.

The duo played big parts in helping the Lady Cavs to a perfect 4-0 week on the diamond. UVa-Wise improved to 27-13 after the week in which they swept the University of Cumberland, 1-0 and 4-2, before taking a pair from Brevard College, 3-1 and 2-1.

King paced UVa-Wise at the plate where she batted .500 (six for 12) and extended her career-best hitting streak to 12 games. The junior from Castlewood, Va. had both at least one hit and one run in each of the four contests. The corner infielder had a run-scoring double in both ends of the University of the Cumberlands twinbill. She added one hit in the first game versus Brevard before having her second three-hit effort including driving in the team's lone two runs of the game.

In 116 at bats, King is hitting a career-best .302 with 35 hits including five doubles and two triples. She stands third in rbi with 21 while scoring 12 runs. The third-year player also the top fielding percentage of the Lady Cavs' regular starters at .988 in 335 chances.

Mazur continued her growth on the mound with an impressive week. The first-year hurler was almost unhittable in two complete game wins. The Virginia Beach, Va. native shutout the University of the Cumberlands, 1-0, over eight frames where she allowed four hits and walked one while fanning nine. She followed her third blanking of an opponent with a seven-inning winning performance against Brevard. Mazur gave up five hits, one run and walked six with five strikeouts. For the week, the freshman posted a 0.47 earned run average and struck out 15 hitters.

The Kempsville High product improved to 10-6 on the season and has a 1.65 era over 97.2 innings. She leads the team with 91 strikeouts and is second in the AAC with a .180 opponents' batting average.

The Lady Cavs will finish their regular season on Sunday when they face Mountain Stats University on the road. The team will then move onto the AAC playoffs next week where they will be no worse than the second seed.
