Wise, VA – For the second time in two weeks, the University of the Cumberlands was able to sweep the UVA-Wise softball squad. The Lady Patriots took the Thursday afternoon contests, 4-2 and 4-1.
UCumberlands took both part of a twinbill in Williamsburg, KY, 6-4 and 2-1, on Feb. 28th.
Senior Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) was the top UVA-Wise (2-9) hitter going three for six with a double. Mary Wilson (Virginia Beach, VA) belted a solo homer in the first game and a double in the second. Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) had two hits in the first game while Christine Cantone (Virginia Beach, VA) produced a pair of singles in the second ballgame. Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) and Shelley Newton (Virginia Beach, VA) accounted for the team’s other two singles.
Samantha Kooch had the big day for Cumberlands (7-5) with two two-run homers in the opener and another two hits in the second game.
After three and a half scoreless innings, Wilson blasted her first home run of the season to deep left center field for what would be the only Lady Cavs lead of the day, 1-0.
The Lady Patriots answered right back with a leadoff single from Brittany Gloyd and then the first two-run round-tripper from Kooch three batters later to edge ahead, 2-1, in the fifth. The score remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh when Jess Taulbee singled with one out and Kooch followed with her second two-run homer for a 4-1 lead.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Amber Salyer (Wise, VA) reached on a fielding error. Hannah Ellis (Keokee, VA) pinch ran and moved to second on a Lawson single and came home when Frazier drove her in. The rally was short lived as Newton hit into a fielder’s choice to end the game, 4-2.
In the second game, Katie Kitchen broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third with a two-run double off the right field fence, 2-0. The Lady Cavs pushed across a single score in the bottom of the frame when Amber Harvey ( Millboro, VA) lofted a sac fly to left to plate Newton, who singled, to make it 2-1. The Lady Patriots added two unearned runs in the top of the sixth and held off UVA-Wise the last two trips to the plate for the 4-1 win.
UVA-Wise will next face Lee University for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on the road before playing in the Savannah College of Art & Design Smash Hit event from Mar. 11-13.
