Game 1 Boxscore

Game 2 Boxscore

Savannah, GA – Maybe all it takes is a nice spring break trip to Savannah to get the UVA-Wise softball team rolling. The Lady Cavs have done just that as Monday they repeated their winning ways over the same Illinois-Springfield, 9-3, and St. Francis (IN), 12-4 in five innings.

UVA-Wise improved to 6-11 with the two wins compliments of scoring 21 runs in 12 innings. Univ. of Illinois at Springfield dropped to 2-8 and St. Francis to 1-4.

Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA) had the big bat again along with Mary Wilson (Virginia Beach, VA). After driving in 11 runs Sunday, Newton added four more rbi, three hits, a double and two runs. Wilson opened the day with a two-run homer, her second of the year, and totaled three hits and two runs on the day. Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) and Tori Flint (Charlottesville, VA) both doubled as part of their two hits with Lawson scoring four times. Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) had a hit and two runs in each game. Christine Cantone (Virginia Beach, VA) lined two hits with a rbi double and Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, VA) one hit in the first contest.

Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, TN) allowed one earned run and six hits with two strikeouts for the win in the first game. Lauren Snead (Troutville, VA) picked up the five innings victory in the late game.

The Lady Cavs jumped on the PrairieStars from the start. Lawson walked, stole second and moved to third on a Frazier single. Newton ground out to score Lawson before Wilson blasted a round-tripper. Cantone added a run-scoring double to finish the frame, 4-0.

Ill.-Springfield scored once in the bottom of the first before UVA-Wise put four more tallies onto the board in the second. Flint sliced a three-run double and Cantone added her second run-producing hit to make it 8-1. The Lady Cavs scored one more time in the third before the PrairieStars finished the scoring with two more in the bottom of the third for the 9-3 final.

UVA-Wise kept the scoring going in the second game against St. Francis. Lawson walked, stole second and was drove in on a Newton single before a Lady Cougar error allowed a second run to score.

St. Francis scored once in the second before the UVA-Wise run explosion. The Lady Cavs sent 15 batters to plate and exploded for nine runs capped by a two-run Frazier single and a Lawson double which plated two more scores to make it 11-1.

The Lady Cougars added single scores in the third, fourth and fifth. Newton singled in Lawson to give UVA-Wise the eight-run rule win for the second-straight time, 12-4 in five innings.

UVA-Wise will finish its three day of contests at the Savannah College of Art & Design Smash Hit Tournament with a 2:00 p.m. game against Illinois-Springfield and a 4:00 p.m. affair versus Missouri Baptist.
