Savannah, GA – The UVA-Wise softball team should consider a return trip next year to the Savannah College of Art & Design Smash Hit Tournament. The Lady Cavs completed a perfect six for six in three days at the event with a 10-2 win in five frames over Illinois at Springfield before a comeback 8-6 victory past Missouri Baptist.
UVA-Wise takes its season mark to 8-11 after the third day of sweeps. In fact, the Lady Cavs did not score less than eight runs in any of the six games and averaged 10.6 runs per contest.
Centerfielder Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) was the catalyst again on Tuesday. Lawson had a two-run triple in the first game before adding a double and a two-run homer to put the team ahead for good in the seventh for a total of four hits, five runs, four rbi and two steals.
Tori Flint (Charlottesville, VA) had to solid games. Flint went two for three in the first game before hitting a double and solo homer in the latter game. Alicia King (Castlewood, VA) broke out of her struggles with four hits with a triple, two runs and three runs batted in. Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) produced three hits with a double. Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) had a hit in each affair including her first home run in a UVA-Wise uniform in game two. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA) continued her rbi barrage with three more on two hits and a double. Mary Wilson (Virginia Beach, VA) added a double.
For the fifth time, UVA-Wise scored in its first trip to the plate. Lawson walked, stole second and eventually scored on a Newton fielder’s choice. King and Christine Cantone (Virginia Beach, VA) lined run-scoring singles to make it 3-0.
The PrairieStars scored once in the first before the Lady Cavs’ Frazier doubled in Lawson, who walked, and Wilson lofted a sac fly for a 5-1 tally.
Leading 5-2 in the top of the third, Lawson ripped a two-run triple while Newton and Wilson had rbi doubles in a five-run frame for what would be the final of 10-2 in five innings. Amanda Wheelers Sims picked up the victory on the hill with seven hits, two runs and three strikeouts.
The Lady Cavs scored in the first for the sixth-straight time. Lawson doubled and later scored on a Newton sac fly. The Spartans scored twice in the bottom of the third before Quillen led off the fourth with a solo homer to tie it, 2-2.
Missouri Baptist answered with three scores in the bottom of the fourth to edge ahead, 5-2. Flint homered and Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, VA) singled in Cantone for a 5-4 score in the fifth.
King tripled in two runs to give UVA-Wise the lead in the top of the seventh before Lawson belted a two-run round-tripper. Missouri Baptist scored once in the bottom of the inning but was not enough for an 8-6 UVA-Wise win.
The Lady Cavs will now be off until playing at Trevecca Nazarene for two games Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
