Lady Cavs Fall a Run Short in Opener vs. Webber Int’al

February 16, 2007

Boxscore

Waleska, GA – Without playing outside but a few times, UVA-Wise fell a run short, 11-10, in a six inning time limit shortened contest against Webber International to start the season Friday night in the Reinhardt Invitational.

Trailing 11-7, the Lady Cavs (0-1) saw Sarah Frazier reach on an error and score on a Shelley Newton single. Mary Wilson singled and Newton came home on a wild pitch. Sarah Smith drove in Wilson but could not manage a fourth run to lose 11-10 after five and a ½ innings.

Newton (Chesapeake, VA) was a perfect four for four with two doubles and three rbi. Tori Flint ( Charlottesville, VA) belted a solo home run, had two hits and drove in three runs. Pitching the final five frames, Lauren Snead (Troutville, VA) picked up the loss in relief of Amanada Wheeler Sims. The lack of playing outside was evident by the rust of the Lady Cavs who committed six errors and could not shake the rust off on the night.

In the opening inning, Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) walked, Frazier singled and Newton drove both in with a two-bagger for a 2-0 lead. Webber International (4-2) plated five runs in the bottom of the first to knock Wheeler Sims out of the game.

Flint hit her home run in the top of the second and drove in two of the three runs in the top of the third for a 7-5 lead. The Lady Warriors tied the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.

Webber International scored a deciding four tallies in the bottom of the fifth for a 11-7 margin to set up the UVA-Wise comeback try in the top of the time limit shortened six inning.

The Lady Cavs will play three games on Saturday. The team will take on Shorter College at 10 a.m. before playing back-to-back games against Emmanual College at 5:00 p.m. and Brenau College at 7:00 p.m.
