Late Runs Gives 6th-Ranked Trevecca Nazarene Pair of One-Run Wins over UVA-Wise

Nashville, TN – The Lady Cavs played well but gave up three late runs to the Lady Trojans in both games to lose two one-run games. Sixth-ranked Trevecca Nazarene edged past UVA-Wise, 6-5 and 7-6, on Saturday evening.

In the two games, the Lady Cavs had their power bats going with five home runs. Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) belted a grand slam in the opener before Tori Flint (Charlottesville, VA) had two round-trippers and Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA) and Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) a solo shot apiece in the second affair. Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, VA) lined three singles, Amber Harvey (Millboro, VA) had two hits and Mary Wilson (Virginia Beach, VA) produced the final base hit on the day.

UVA-Wise (8-13) pushed across the first run in the top of the third before Trevecca Nazarene (20-3) tied it in the bottom of the frame. The Lady Trojans edged ahead 3-1 with a pair of scores in the fourth.

Quillen walked, Alicia King (Castlewood, VA) was hit by a pitch and Mihelarkis singled to load the bases to start the fifth. Lawson stepped to the plate and connected for a grand slam homer over center field to make it 5-3. The score remained 5-3 until the bottom of the sixth. Brittiany Johnson hit a solo shot to begin the at bat. Diana Eckert lined a one-out double before Alicia Lee singled. Chelsea Bailey hit in both runners with a single for what would be the final score of 6-5.

The Lady Cavs scored first in the latter contest again. Newton and Flint blasted back-to-back solo homers for a 2-0 lead. The Lady Trojans tied the game, 2-2, with their own pair in the bottom of the first.

UVA-Wise scored an unearned tally in the third and Quillen hit her home run in the fourth to lead 3-1. The home team plated one run in the fourth before Flint hit a two-run homer in the fifth for a 6-3 score.

Trevecca Nazarene pushed across one run in the sixth. The host completed its second comeback with two walks, a double and a single to result in the deciding three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 7-6.

UVA-Wise will now be off until playing its Appalachian Athletic Conference opening twinbill at Virginia Intermont on Tuesday, March 20 th starting at 2:00 p.m.
