Game 2 Boxscore

Wise, VA – Britney Lawson continued her hot hitting with three extra base hits including a home run and UVA-Wise added two more round-trippers to sweep Montreat in softball, 4-2 and 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Cavs were the last Appalachian Athletic Conference team to open league play and are now 2-0 and up to 12-13 on the year. Montreat drops to 0-4 in the conference and 6-17 for the year.

Lawson (Duffield, VA) went four for seven at the plate with a double in the opener and three hits in the second with a rbi triple and two-run homer, her sixth. Shelley Newton took her season average to .425 with three hits in six trips. Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, VA) and Tori Flint (Charlottesville, VA) belted two-run homers apiece in the first contest. Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) lined two singles and one each from Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) and Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, VA).

In the opener, Newton singled with two outs before Flint blasted her seventh home run of the year for a 2-0 score. Hannah Ellis (Keokee, VA) walked to start the bottom of the second before Wilson connected for a two-run shot to make it 4-0.

Laruen Snead (Troutville, VA) was stellar on the mound for the first sixth inning allowing one walk and no hits. In the seventh, Montreat’s Amber Taylor reached base on an error before Rachel Stowe hit a two-run homer with two outs to cut it to 4-2. Snead (6-6) enticed the next batter to ground out for the win.

UVA-Wise put a run on the board to start the second contest. Lawson singled to center and advanced to second on a fielding error. She moved to third on a Frazier sac ground out before Newton single her in. Montreat tied the game, 1-1, in the third on a Brittany Burns triple.

Mihelarakis walked to lead off bottom of the third and came home on a triple by Lawson to right center. Frazier ground out to short to score Lawson for a 3-1 tally. The two combined for the two runs in the fifth as Mihelarakis singled to left and came around on Lawson’s fifth home run of the year to right field to make it 5-1.

Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, TN), who is 6-5, allowed a single run in the top of the seventh but no more for the 5-2 win.

UVA-Wise will complete its weekend home stand with a pair of games starting at 1:00 p.m. against West Virginia Tech on Sunday.
