Lady Cavs Let Opener Slip Away, Bounce Back for Easy Second Victory over VI

Bristol, VA – UVA-Wise let the softball opener slip away, 10-9, before bouncing back for an easy second contest victory over Virginia Intermont, 8-1, in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup.
The split was the first AAC defeat for the Lady Cavs as they went to 5-1 while moving to 15-14 overall. The Lady Cobras are now 10-4 on the year and 3-1 in the league.
Virginia Intermont was able to take advantage of two walks and one error spearheaded a winning rally before three-straight hits plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 10-9 win.
Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, TN) came back to have a stellar effort on the hill in the late contest by recording a four-hitter in the Lady Cavs 8-1 victory.
Alicia King (Castlewood, VA) continued her hot week with four hits, two in each game, with a triple. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA), Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN), Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) and Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, VA) all lined three hits. Newton had a triple and double with five rbi. Quillen had a triple and double in the first contest while Lawson had a three-batter.
Amber Harvey (Millboro, VA) laced two doubles in the nightcap while Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, VA) and Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) had two singles while Tori Flint (Charlottesville, VA) and Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, VA) added one base hit apiece.
The Lady Cobras were the first ones on the scoreboard with a single run in the second before Newton single scored Wilson in the top of the third, 1-1.
VI came right back with four runs in the home half of the frame for four tallies for a 5-1 lead. Quillen tripled in Flint, who reached on a walk in the fourth before the Lady Cobras answered the one score in the bottom of the inning for a 6-2 score.
UVA-Wise came on strong with two runs in the fifth when Lawson tripled and came home on a three-bagger from Newton, who later scored on a VI miscue. In the sixth, a fielder’s choice and a two-run single from Newton capped a four run trip to give the Lady Cavs an 8-6 lead. After a double, Quillen came home after singles from Wilson and Mihelarakis to make it 9-6.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, VI drew two outs and loaded the bases on an error. The home team followed with a three-run double and a game-winning single to pull out the 10-9 win.
For the late game, the game started with four scoreless innings. The Lady Cavs posted a big five-run inning capped by a two-run double off the bat of Newton and a rbi triple from King.
VI pushed across a single score in the sixth before Harvey doubled home King as part of a three score trip to make it 8-1. Wheeler Sims held the Lady Cobras scoreless in the home half of the seventh for the win.
UVA-Wise will now be off until next Tuesday when they travel to AAC rival Tennessee Wesleyan for a 2:00 p.m. twinbill.
