Waleska, GA – After a tough high-scoring loss late Friday night, the second day of the 2007 softball season proved no better for UVA-Wise. The Lady Cavs dropped a morning, 6-3, game to Shorter College before falling in back-to-back evening games to Emmanuel College, 7-3, and Brenau College, 8-0 in five innings, in the second day of the Reinhardt Invitational.

UVA-Wise managed only eight hits in the three games while committing 10 errors. The Lady Cavs (0-4) were outscored 21-6.

In the morning contest, UVA-Wise jumped on Shorter College in the first at bat. Amber Harvey walked and Shelley Newton followed with a single. Tori Flint, who went two for two, stepped up and delivered a three-run home run.

The Lady Cavs’ bats went quiet from the opening trip to the plate. The Lady Hawks scored in each of the next four frames with two two-run frames and two single tally efforts while holding their opponent to one hit in the final five innings for a 6-3 win.

UVA-Wise repeated its first inning success but again could not carry it the rest of the contest. Britney Lawson walked and stole second before Sarah Frazier walked and Newton was hit by a pitch. Flint brought in two scores on an Emmanuel error. Harvey produced an rbi ground out to first to plate Newton and a 3-0 score.

After scoring once in the top of the third, Emmanuel had a big four-run inning on the strength of five hits and two UVA-Wise errors to go ahead 5-3. The Lady Eagles added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh before winning 7-3.

The final game of the three came against Brenau College, who received national ranking votes in the preseason poll. The Lady Tigers wasted no time by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first before exploding for five more in the third inning on four hits and two costly UVA-Wise miscues.

Brenau added the decisive run in the bottom of the fourth on leadoff double and two out single to make it 8-0. UVA-Wise produced two hits but could not score in the top of the fifth to fall to the eight-run rule.

The Lady Cavs will finish its weekend with a 10:00 a.m. contest against host Reinhardt College on Sunday.
