Game 2 Boxscore

Athens, TN – UVA-Wise let a second last inning contest slip through its fingers before having a big fifth to split the softball twinbill at Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Tennessee Wesleyan, 2-1 in eight innings and 4-1.

With the split, the Lady Cavaliers remain one game ahead of Milligan College in the AAC standings at 6-2 while going to 16-15 on the year. The Lady Bulldogs remain .500 in the league at 4-4 with a 13-15 season mark.

Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA), Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) and Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) posted three hits apiece. Newton belted her fifth homer of the year in the opener as the lone Lady Cavs’ extra base hit. Hannah Ellis (Keokee, VA), Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, VA) and Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) lined on single each.

Trailing 1-0 after a first frame run by the home team, Newton blasted a solo homer to tie the contest in the top of the sixth. The game went to the international extra inning rule in the eighth. UVA-Wise was held scoreless on its turn before Tennessee Wesleyan bunted the runner to third before Sarah Hoskins singled to plate the winning run, 2-1, without an out recorded.

The Lady Bulldogs posted a run in the home first again in the late contest. The Lady Cavs took control with a four-run fifth. With two out, Ellis singled, Lawson was hit by a pitch and Frazier singled to load the bases. Newton drew a rbi walk to tie the game before Quillen lined a single to score both Lawson and Frazier. The tallies would be all Lauren Snead (Troutville, VA) would need. She held the home team scoreless in its final three turns at bat for the 4-1 win.

UVA-Wise will now have a day off before hosting regional foe Emory & Henry College on Thursday, April 5 th for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
