Snead Solid in Relief and Game Two Long Ball Helps Cavs Sweep Wasps

Wise, VA – On a cold Thursday afternoon, UVA-Wise received solid pitching relief from Lauren Snead and a late three-run homer from Alicia King to sweep Emory & Henry in softball, 4-0 and 4-1.
Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) hit a two-run homer in the first game and King (Castlewood, VA) belted her own three-run shot in the latter contest to put the games out of reach for the Lady Cavs (18-15). The two homers gives UVA-Wise 27 as a team in 33 games after producing just 10 round-trippers in 51 games last season.
Snead (Troutville, VA) came on in the second inning of the opener for Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, TN), who was struck by a line drive. The freshman walked her first two batters before retiring 13-straight as she allowed just one hit and fanned six over 5 1/3 innings for the opening win. Snead worked the first four frames of the latter contest where she allowed one run and five hits before Tori Flint (Charlottesville, VA) picked up the victory with three scoreless innings.
Amber Harvey (Millboro, VA), Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, VA) and Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) lined two hits apiece. Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, VA), Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA) and Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) had one hit.
For the visiting Wasps (15-17), Ashley Fitzgibbons, Dana Dettmar and Laken Price recorded two hits apiece. Dettmar and Robin Phelps sliced doubles.
Leading 1-0 after Lawson scored on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the first, Wheeler Sims took a line drive off the hand by Emory & Henry’s Shannon Pharis. Snead came on to walk her first two batters before retiring 13 Wasps in a row.
In the third, Wilson drove in Flint on a run-scoring ground out for a 2-0 score. Quillen blasted her third homer of the year, a two-run shot, to left field the next inning for what would be the 4-0 final.
After two and half scoreless innings to start the second inning, Mihelarakis, Newton and Quillen drew consecutive free passes. Mihelarakis scored on a wild pitch two batters later for a 1-0 lead. Emory & Henry answered the next half inning when Price singled up the middle with two outs to plate Phelps, 1-1.
The tally remained 1-1 until the home sixth. Hannah Ellis (Keokee, VA) started the at bat with a pinch hit walk. Harvey singled on a bunt before King took a two strike pitch deep to left center field for the game-winning scores for a 4-1 score. Flint, who relieved Snead in the fifth, held the Wasps scoreless in the seventh to complete the sweep.
UVA-Wise will now be off until hosting the University of Charleston next Tuesday, April 10 th starting at 3:00 p.m.
