Wise, VA – Hannah Ellis’ sixth inning single drove in Sarah Frazier for the game-winning run, 2-1, in the late game to give UVA-Wise a softball split against NCAA DII University of Charleston on Thursday. Andrea Lewis one-hit the Lady Cavs in a 3-0 opening win for the Golden Eagles.
UVA-Wise (19-16) mounted seven hits in the two games. Sophomore Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, VA) was the only multiple hit player with a double and single in the later game. Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) had a bunt single as the lone Lady Cavs’ hit in the first game. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA), Amber Quillen ( Kingsport, TN), Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, VA) and Ellis (Keokee, VA) produced the other hits.
Freshman Lauren Snead (Troutville, VA) continued her solid work on the mound. She scattered seven hits, one earned run, walked three and struck out three to improve to 9-6 in the late game. Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, TN) pitched a good first game. Wheeler gave up 10 hits, one earned run and walked one while fanning one.
In the opener, UCharleston’s Michelle Sabelhaus lofted a ball to left which was misplayed for an error to plate Rachel Pike with the first run of the game in the third. The visitors added two insurance runs in the sixth as Brittany Stogdale had an rbi single and Pike lined a run-scoring double to make it 3-0.
The three runs was plenty for pitcher Andrea Lewis who allowed just a sixth inning bunt single by Lawson to complete the one-hitter. Lewis struck out 11 Lady Cavs’ batters.
The home team put the first score on the board in the late contest. Mihelarakis singled to left center and Newton was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Alicia King (Castlewood, VA) walked to load the bases with two outs. Quillen’s grounder to short stop was bobbled for an error to score Mihelarakis for a 1-0 tally.
The Golden Eagles answered in the top of the second when Kathy Jo Getz singled to center to plate Stogdale to tie the game, 1-1.
The game remained deadlocked until the home sixth. Quillen singled to left and Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) pinch ran for her. Cantone sacrificed Frazier to second. After an out, Ellis lined a single to center to score a sliding Frazier before the Charleston catcher’s tag at home to go ahead 2-1. Snead allowed a lead off single before retiring the next three batters for the 2-1 win.
The University of Charleston outhit UVA-Wise 17-7. Maria Taylor had four hits in the two contests while Lewis and Getz had three apiece. Lewis also picked up the complete game defeat in the late affair.
UVA-Wise will return to Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Wednesday for a 2:00 p.m. twinbill at Bluefield College.
