Lady Cavs’ Softball Blasts Lady Rams

Bluefield, VA – The UVA-Wise softball team showed why they have been the class of the Appalachian Athletic Conference for the past half decade. The Lady Cavs blasted the host Bluefield College Lady Rams by scores of 13-0 in six innings and 9-1 in five innings in the makeup twinbill.
With the convincing sweep, UVA-Wise (21-16) improves to an AAC best 8-2, to lead the league by a game over Virginia Intermont (6-2). Bluefield drops to 0-8 in the conference and 3-23 on the season.
Sophomore Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, VA) had a breakout day with five hits, three singles in game one and then a two-run homer and a two-run double in the late game. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA) hit her sixth home run, a two-run variety to go with a single in game two.
Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) laced two doubles as part of a four-hit game one for the centerfielder. Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, VA) and Alicia King (Castlewood, VA) had two singles in first affair. Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) doubled and singled in the second contest.
Pitchers Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, TN) and Lauren Snead (Troutville, VA) allowed four hits in a combined 11 innings of work. Wheeler Sims (9-7) gave up three hits in for second shutout of the season. Snead (10-6) gave up just a solo home run in the bottom of the first as her lone hit in the late game.
UVA-Wise outscored Bluefield 22-1 and outhit the home team 23-4 in the twinbill.
In the opener, the Lady Cavs plated single scores in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings to lead 4-0. The visitors broke out for their biggest frame of the season of nine runs with a rbi double from Lawson the big hit for a 13-0 tally. Wheeler Sims held Bluefield scoreless one last time in the home sixth for the shutout.
UVA-Wise wasted no time in the top of the first in game two. Newton belted a two-run homer and Wilson lined a two-run double as part of a six score trip to the plate. The Lady Rams received their lone score of the day in the home first with a homer to make it 6-1.
After a seventh tally in the second, Wilson hit her fourth round-tripper of the season in the top of the fifth for what would be the 9-1 final due to the eight-run rule in five innings.
UVA-Wise is scheduled to host Milligan College on Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m.
