UVA-Wise Scores Eight Twice but Split at Georgetown

Georgetown, KY – The UVA-Wise softball offense was alive and well as it produced eight runs in both games Tuesday but came out on top just in one of the two games to split at Georgetown College, winning 8-5 before falling 9-8.
Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) had the most hits in a day of her UVA-Wise (22-17) career. The senior went three for four in both games while scoring twice, lining two doubles and driving in five runs. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA) had her own solid day with two hits in each contest with her seventh homer, two two-baggers and four runs batted in.
Amber Harvey (Millboro, VA) laced a triple while Alicia King (Castlewood, VA) and Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, VA) added doubles. Lauren Snead (Troutville, VA) picked up her 11 th mound win going the distance in the first game.
In the opener, UVA-Wise wasted no time getting on the board. Quillen doubled in Bobbi Mihelarakis, who reached on an error, and Harvey tripled in two more two batters later for a 3-0 first inning score.
The game was tied 4-4 after three frames. The Lady Cavs broke the tie with a big fifth inning. Newton doubled in Mihelarakis, who singled to start the trip to the plate. Quillen singled home Newton. Tori Flint (Charlottesville, VA) picked up a rbi by being hit by a pitch before Cantone doubled in the fourth run to make it 8-4. Snead allowed one unearned run in the bottom of the seventh for the 8-5 final.
The Lady Tigers (23-10) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two against Harvey, who made her first collegiate appearance on the mound and start.
Newton chipped into the margin with a two-run homer to plate Harvey, who walked, to make it 4-2. In the fifth, Quillen singled home Lawson for a 5-3 tally.
The visitors pulled ahead with a big five-run sixth. As part of the big trip to the plate, Newton doubled in one run and Quillen singled home two more for an 8-8 tie game.
Georgetown used its last at bat successfully. With runners on first and second and one out, Jennifer Tarplee doubled home the winning run to end the game for the 9-8 final.
UVA-Wise will host King College in a conference makeup twinbill on Wednesday, April 18th starting at 3:00 p.m.
