UVA-Wise Claims 4 th-Straight AAC Softball Title

Wise, VA – For the fourth-straight season and fifth in six years, UVA-Wise claimed the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season title. The Lady Cavaliers won the Sunday conference opener, 4-2, over the Milligan College Lady Buffs for the acclaim before dropping a 4-2 second contest.
UVA-Wise completed its AAC slate 10-4 to earn the regular season title for the fourth year in a row. Union College is 8-4 with two games left but UVA-Wise swept them in the season meetings. Milligan went to 28-20 and 8-6 in the AAC.
Alicia King (Castlewood, VA) produced a four for five day at the plate with a double and one run. Amber Harvey (Millboro, VA) belted her first career home run, a two-run shot, in the second game while Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA) hit her eighth of the year, a solo shot, in the first game.
Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, VA), Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, VA) and Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) lined two hits apiece with a double. Wilson also drove in two runs. Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) lined a run-scoring single and Hannah Ellis (Keokee, VA) singled. Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, TN) picked up her 11 th win of the year going the distance on the mound in the first game.
For the Lady Buffs, Megan Aldridge pounded three extra base hits of her four for the game with a double, triple and home run. Jessica Blevins added three doubles in the twinbill. Leah White had a single and double while Mallory Tincher connected for a solo home run. Heather Poindexter doubled for the Milligan other hit while Maegan Hambrick picked up the game two win on the hill.
In the opener, Wilson singled home Cantone, who singled, to open the scoring in the second. Newton homered to right in the third. The Lady Cavs added two more runs in the fourth when King and Wilson lined back-to-back two-baggers followed by a Frazier single up the middle to make it 4-0.
Milligan received a solo homer from Aldridge followed by its own back-to-back doubles from Blevins and White to cut it 4-2. Wheeler Sims sent down six of the next seven batters for the 4-2 win.
Tincher belted a solo home run to start the second of the late game for a 1-0 Milligan score and a lead they would not relinquish. The visitors added two more in the third before Harvey blasted her own home run to drive in Ellis, who singled, to cut the game to 3-2 after three.
Poindexter led off the top of the fifth with a double to right before she was drove home on an Aldridge triple off the center field fence to make it 4-2. The Lady Cavs managed just two hits in their final three at bats against Hambrick for the 4-2 final.
UVA-Wise celebrated ‘Senior Day’ and the trio of veterans of Tori Flint (Charlottesville, VA), Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) and King. Flint was hitless in three at bats in the first game before allowing just one run over four innings in relief in the second contest. Quillen did not get a hit but had at least four run-saving plays at third.
The Lady Cavs will trek to NCAA DII University of Charleston for a 3:00 p.m. twinbill on Wednesday.
