Lady Cavs Split Softball DH at DII U. Charleston

Charleston, WV – UVA-Wise used a five-run seventh to comeback to take a 6-4 win in the opener at NCAA DII University of Charleston before the home team garnered a 4-2 win in the late contest.

After claiming its fourth-straight Appalachian Athletic Conference crown Sunday, the Lady Cavs move to 25-20 overall and split two twinbills against the DII Golden Eagles (28-16).

Amber Harvey (Millboro, VA) continued to come on late in her first year with three hits including a double. Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) and Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, VA) produced a double and single apiece while both Shelley Newton (Cheseapeake, VA) and Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) had two singles.

Alicia King (Castlewood, VA) added a two-bagger. Rounding out the hits on the day, Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN), Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, VA) and Hannah Ellis (Keokee, VA) had one hit. Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, TN) picked up the opening victory to improve to 12-8.

The opener was scoreless for the opening five frames. In the top of the sixth, Frazier singled and moved to second on a fielding error by the right fielder. Newton drove her home with a single. Charleston answered with two tallies in the home sixth to go ahead 2-1.

Three doubles by Lawson, King and Cantone were the big hits as part of a five-run seventh for the visitors to go ahead 6-2. The Golden Eagles were able to plate a pair but fell short in their attempt to regain the lead to fall 6-4.

Charleston wasted no time in getting on board in the nightcap with single scores in the first and second innings. The host added two more in the home fifth to edge ahead 4-0.

Mihelarakis laced a two-run single to score Harvey, who singled, and Newton, who was hit by a pitch, to cut the margin to 4-2 in the sixth. UVA-Wise could not get any closer in the top of the seventh to go down by the same score.

The Lady Cavs will finish their regular season docket with a home doubleheader Sunday, April 29 th starting at 12:00 p.m. against Indiana-Southeast.
