Bluff City, TN – In less than three full seasons, UVA-Wise head coach Tori Raby-Gentry recorded her 100th victory leading the softball program as the Appalachian Athletic Conference top-seeded team dispatched with Bluefield, 11-3 in six innings, on Wednesday morning to reach the milestone.
The Lady Cavs’ victory improved the team to 27-21 and moved them into the winner’s bracket where they will face Milligan College, who defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 4-3 in eight frames, for a 5:00 p.m. contest later today. Raby-Gentry is now 100-55 in her three years directing UVA-Wise.
Sophomore Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) accounted for one third of the team’s nine hits. She blasted her eighth homer, a two-run shot, to go with two singles, three runs and three rbi. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA) had a double, singles, two walks and two runs batted in. Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) lined two hits with one driving in two scores. Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, VA) and Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) had singles.
Pitcher Lauren Snead (Troutville, VA) fanned a season-best 11 Bluefield (3-34) batters. She scattered five hits, one earned run and walked two to improve to 12-9.
Lawson put the Lady Cavs on the board in the bottom of the first. She singled, stole second and came home on a Newton single to right field. UVA-Wise exploded for five more tallies in the second trip to the plate highlighted by a run-scoring single from Lawson and a two-run hit from Quillen to make it 6-0.
The game remained 6-0 until the sixth inning. Bluefield put its first three batters on base by a single and two walks. The Lady Rams would cut into the deficit with three runs after two Lady Cavs’ errors were made for a 6-3 score.
UVA-Wise answered with another big five-run frame to end the game in the home sixth. Frazier led off with a single and scored on a Lawson homer to right center. Cantone lined a rbi single before Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, VA) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring the final run home to end the contest 11-3.
