Snead Mows Down Lady Buffs in Softball Regional

May 9, 2007

Boxscore

Athens, TN – Lauren Snead mowed down 14 Milligan College batters to lead UVa.-Wise to a decisive 7-2 softball victory in the second round of the NAIA Region XII championships on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Cavs (30-23) will advance to the winner’s bracket final tonight for a 7:00 p.m. start at the Athens Recreational Park. The UVa.-Wise opponent will be the team right behind them in the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season Union College. Union blanked Virginia Intermont, 3-0, to advance.

Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) led the Lady Cavs’ effort at the plate with three singles and two rbi. Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, VA) produced a double and single. Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) added two singles with two runs batted in. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA) lined a run-scoring single with Tori Flint (Charlottesville, VA), Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, VA) and Michelle Osborne (Damascus, VA) added hits.

Freshman Snead (Troutville, VA) fanned a career-best 14 batters to improve to 14-9 on the year. She allowed just four hits, two earned runs and walked four over seven innings.

After three scoreless innings, UVa.-Wise plated a run in the top of the fourth. The Lady Cavs added three more the next trip to the plate. Wilson, Osborne and Lawson singled. After Lawson made an out on base, Amber Harvey was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Newton singled home one and Quillen followed with a two rbi single to make it 4-0.

Cantone led off the top of the sixth with a double. Later in the turn at bat, Lawson had the big hit with a two-run single as part of a second three-score inning to make it 7-0. Snead had her lone rough inning by allowing Milligan (32-25) a double and two-run homer but was all she would allow in the 7-2 victory.
