Mobile Run-Rules UVA-Wise in Second Pool Contest

May 18, 2007

Boxscore

Decatur, AL – The toughest two softball games of the year proved to be very frustrating for UVA-Wise. After dropping a 10-1 morning contest to top-rated Cal Baptist, defending national champion University of Mobile (AL) plated nine runs over the third and fourth frames to run-rule UVA-Wise 11-2 in five frames in the second pool play NAIA National Championships contest.

The Lady Cavs (32-25) held their own hitting wise in the morning but managed just two singles, one each by Amber Harvey (Millboro, VA) and Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) against the Lady Rams (35-14).

UVA-Wise will look to bounce back in its second day of Pool Play on Saturday. The team faces Savannah College of Art & Design at 12:30 p.m. and Dickinson State (ND) at 8:00 p.m.

UMobile was the first team on the board in the bottom of the second. Cristina Rodriguez reached on an error to lead off, was sacrificed to second, went to third and scored on back-to-back singles. A second tally came home on a passed ball to make it 2-0.

In the top of the third, Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, VA) started the trip with a walk. Two batters later, Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) saw the Lady Ram pitcher throw away her bunt to put runners on the corners. Frazier would then steal second. After a second out, Harvey lined a two-run single down the left field line to tied the contest, 2-2, after two and half innings.

The run-scoring single would be the last positive thing to happen for UVA-Wise. After one out in the home third, Mobile strung together three-straight singles to start the at bat. A bases loaded walk, a one-run single, a sac fly to left and a two-run single finish the five-run inning for a 7-2 score.

The Lady Rams added three more scores in the fourth on four hits, a second Lady Cavs’ error, a walk and a hit batter for what would be the final of 11-2. UVA-Wise was sent down in order in the top of the fifth to end the game.
