February Docket Ends with Two Close Lady Cavs’ Softball Losses

Williamsburg, KY – February cannot end soon enough for the UVA-Wise softball team. The Lady Cavs dropped two close contests, 6-4 and 2-1, at the University of Cumberlands Monday afternoon. Sarah Frazier lined four hits on the day for UVA-Wise.

The Lady Patriots improved to 3-5 on the season while the Lady Cavs will try to put the first month behind them after finishing 0-7.

Frazier accounted for four hits of the team’s eight in the twinbill. Britney Lawson and Shelley Newton laced two singles for the other four.

Trailing 4-0 over the first five innings, the Lady Cavs received a walk to Lawson. Frazier followed by singling before Newton hit Lawson in. Tori Flint reached on a fielder’s choice for the second tally to plate Frazier for a 4-2 score.

In the top of the seventh, Lawson reached on a fielder’s choice and Frazier on an error. A second Cumberlands miscue allowed Lawson to score before Frazier tied the contest on a field choice on Flint’s at bat.

After a leadoff fly out to center, the Lady Patriots' received a game-winning two-run homer from Lara Jackson to score Katie Kitchen, who singled for the 6-4 victory.

In the second game, UVA-Wise enjoyed its lone lead of the day in the second inning. Lawson singled, stole second and scored on a Lady Patriots error during Frazier’s trip to the plate.

Jackson proved to be the key hitter late in the second game as well for the Cumberlands. She led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple and scored when Whitney Kirby singled her in to follow breaking the tie to make it 2-1. Mindy Breitholle held UVA-Wise scoreless in its last three trips to the plate.

The two teams will take the field again on Thursday afternoon in Wise when the twinbill will start at 2:00 p.m.
