Wise, VA – The ‘new’ season started off well for the UVA-Wise softball team. After a winless first month, the Lady Cavs swept the Lady Cougars of Mountain State, 8-2 and 1-0, behind solid pitching from Amanda Wheeler Sims and Lauren Snead on Wednesday afternoon.
UVA-Wise improved to 2-7 on the season after a rocky first few weeks. Mountain State remains winless at 0-8.
Wheeler Sims ( Jonesborough, TN) scattered six hits and one earned run while fanning five to claim the first win of the day. Snead ( Troutville, VA) allowed six hits, walked one and struck out four for her first collegiate win and shutout of her young career.
The Lady Cavs pounded out eight hits in each contest. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, VA) led the hitters with four for six at bats including three for three in the second game. Junior Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, VA) accounted for three hits, two runs, two stolen bases and an rbi. Britney Lawson (Duffield, VA) and Tori Flint (Charlottesville, VA) had a pair of hits apiece. Lawson scored four runs, laced a run-scoring triple and stole two bags. Flint had both of her hits in the second game with a rbi. Amber Quillen (Kingsport, TN) had a pinch-hit double to lead off a five-run fifth in the opener. Mary Wilson (Virginia Beach, VA), Melanie Sutherland (Birchleaf, VA), Alicia King (Castlewood, VA) and Amber Harvey (Millboro, VA) lined one single.
In the opener, Lawson walked to start the bottom of the first, was sacrificed to second and later scored when Christine Cantone (Virginia Beach, VA) drew a bases loaded walk for a 1-0 score.
Quillen lined a double to right field to start the fifth for UVA-Wise. Lawson followed with a triple down the right field line and scored on a Frazier single in the next at bat. Sutherland and King produced run-scoring hits to cap a five-run frame to make it 6-0.
Lawson was hit by a pitch to start the sixth and later slide under a tag at home on a double steal with Frazier, who later scored on a Mountain State throwing error which would be the eventual 8-2 final.
The second game saw just one run cross the plate. Lawson started things for the Lady Cavs in the bottom of the first with a single, advanced to second on a Frazier ground out and scored on a Flint single past third base for the contest’s lone score. Snead took over from there for her first win on the mound.
UVA-Wise will try to continue its winning ways on Thursday when they host the University of the Cumberlands in a 2:00 p.m. twinbill at Lady Cavs Field.
