Lawson Has Big Days as UVa-Wise Softball Splits at Tusculum

March 2, 2008
GAME 1 BOXSCORE

GAME 2 BOXSCORE

Greeneville, Tenn. – Britney Lawson started off the 2008 UVa-Wise softball campaign in a big fashion and almost single handed led the team to two wins. The Lady Cavaliers fell just short in the opener to the Tusculum Lady Pioneers, 5-3, as Lawson tripled before having a double and home run to led to a 3-0 shutout in game two.

Lawson (Duffield, Va.) posted the three extra base hits and four hits on the day in the first two games the Lady Cavs (1-1) were finally able to play after the first three dates were postponed. The junior had a double, triple and home runs with three of the teams six rbi. Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) made a big collegiate debut with five hits and two stolen bases.

Game 1

Tusculum (6-10) pushed a single run in the home first and added three scored in the fifth as it took advantage of three UVa-Wise miscues.

In the top of the sixth, Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) doubled and was drove home by Lawson on a triple. Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.) lofted a sac fly to plate Lawson for a 4-2 tally. The Lady Pioneers answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning. Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) and Riddenour singled to start the seventh and were advanced on a Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.) sacrifice. Frazier made it home on a fielder’s choice by Newton but UVa-Wise couldn’t score another tally to fall 5-3.

Lauren Snead (Troutville, Va.) went the distance on the mound where she allowed just four hits and one earned run over the six innings.

Game 2

After a scoreless first, Wilson walked and moved to second on a passed ball before running home on a Lawson two-bagger in the second. Lawson made it 2-0 with a solo homer in the fourth. The junior outfielder made it all three runs she was responsible for in the sixth when she singled, stole second and scored on a rbi hit by Frazier.

Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, Tenn.) fired a three-hitter for the mound victory.

UVa-Wise received solid other performances from freshman Candace Winslow (Chesapeake, Va.) with a single in each contest while Hannah Ellis (Keokee, Va.) added a hit in the late game.

The Lady Cavs will next play a 3:00 p.m. twinbill at Pikeville College on Tuesday afternoon.
