Combined Shutout and Seven Run At Bat Gives UVa-Wise Softball Wins over Bluefield

Wise, Va. – Lauren Snead and Megan McCoy fired a combined five-hit shutout and UVa-Wise rode a seven-run third in the late game to take a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference softball games, 5-0 and 9-1 in five, over Bluefield College n Thursday afternoon.
Snead (Troutville, Va.) helped the Lady Cavs (9-7/5-1 AAC) post its second shutout in four games the past two days. She allowed one hit in the first three innings. McCoy (Va. Beach, Va.) picked up her first collegiate win over the final four frames and allowed just four hits.
Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) had a near perfect day at the plate by recording six hits in seven at bats with a double. Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.) and Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.) both lined three singles. Britney Lawson (Duffield, Va.) belted a three-run homer and added a single.
Game 1
The Lady Cavs wasted no time in getting on the board. Ridenour singled, stole second and scored on a Wilson single. The home team took advantage of two Bluefield (2-13/0-4 AAC) miscues the rest of the inning including leading to a run-scoring single by Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) for a 3-0 lead.
UVa-Wise added a Cantone rbi single in the second and a Lawson sac fly for all the five runs it would need. Snead and McCoy fanned six batters to mow down the Lady Rams, 5-0.
Game 2
The Lady Rams scored what be their lone run of the day to open the second game. Felicia Marmo drove in Vicky Martin, who singled. The Lady Cavs would answered in the bottom of the inning. Ridenour reached on a bunt single and moved to second on an errant throw. Two batters later, Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) ground out to third to tie the game before Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.), who walked, scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 lead.
The clinching at bat came two frames later. After scoring single runs were drove home by Newton, Wilson and Cantone, UVa-Wise saw Lawson crush a three-run homer to right to make it 8-1. Frazier would later scamper home on a wild pitch for a 9-1 score.
Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, Tenn.) allowed two hits over the final two Bluefield turns at bat to pick up her fourth win of the win in the 9-1 final after five innings.
The Lady Cavs will now have Friday off before trekking to Union College for a 12:00 p.m. twinbill.
