Barbourville, Ky. – Bobbi Mihelarakis’ two-run fifth inning double proved to be the game-winning hit to aid UVa-Wise in an Appalachian Athletic Conference softball split at Union College Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs edged out a 3-2 nine frame opening win on a sac fly before the Lady Cavs pushed across four fifth inning runs in an 11-8 late victory.
Mihelarakis ( Sterling, Va.) and Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) produced three hits apiece with each having a double for the Lady Cavs (10-8/6-2 AAC). Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) and Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) added extra base hits with a triple and double. Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.) lined two singles with an rbi.
Game 1
UVa-Wise wasted no time scoring in the opening at bat. Ridenour led off the day with a double and later came home on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. Union (9-19/2-2 AAC) tied the game in the fourth when Bethany Outland lofted a sac fly to left.
The game remained tied through seven innings. After a scoreless eighth, the visitors saw Ridenour score on a Lady Bulldog fielding miscue.
Union plated its own score on a UVa-Wise error to tie the game before Outland had her second sac fly for the winning score, 3-2.
Lady Cavs’ starter Lauren Snead took the loss but fanned 10 batters in 8.2 innings.
Game 2
The two rivals busted out the offense in the late contest. UVa-Wise pushed home a trio of runs including a run-scoring single by Cantone. Union came back with four unearned runs in the bottom of the frame for a 4-3 score.
Newton doubled to center driving home Ridenour and Mihelarakis to edge UVa-Wise in front, 5-4. The Lady Bulldogs tied the affair when Ryan Travis doubled in the home second.
After trading fourth inning runs, UVa-Wise had the big offense output in the fifth. Britney Lawson (Duffield, Va.) singled to lead off the trip and Frazier drove her home with a triple. Holly Gilliam (Big Stone Gap, Va.) followed with a pinch hit single to bring home Frazier. Ridenour reached on a fielder’s choice before Mihelarakis doubled to left field to plate both runners and see a 10-6 scoreboard.
Union cut the margin to 10-8 in the bottom of the sixth before UVa-Wise added an insurance tally in the sixth on a Frazier ground out. Reliever Megan McCoy (Va. Beach, Va.) held the home team scoreless in the final two innings to pick up her second victory and the 11-8 final.
The Lady Cavs will face two Mid-South Conference teams on Sunday against Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville.
