UVa-Wise Defeats Mid-South Best, Fall to Lindsey Wilson

Columbia, Ky. – Candace Winslow swung the hot bat to help UVa-Wise defeat the top softball team of the Mid-South Conference, Campbellsville, before falling to another tough team from that league in Lindsey Wilson. Winslow laced three doubles of her four hits as the Lady Cavs won the opener 5-3 over the Lady Tigers before dropping a the second contest to the Lady Blue Raiders, 4-2.
Winslow (Chesapeake, Va.) had her best day at the plate of her first year. The freshman doubled three times and singled one with three rbi to pace UVa-Wise (11-9). Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.) doubled in each contest while Britney Lawson (Duffield, Va.) blasted a two-run homer in the opener. Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) singled and scored twice while stealing four bases. Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.) also had two hits.

Ridenour helped the Lady Cavs get on the board right away in the top of the first. The first-year outfielder singled, stole second and came home on Winslow’s first two-bagger.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth. Cantone lined a single before Lawson connected on her fifth home run of the year to make it 3-0. Campbellsville pushed across its first run in the bottom of the same frame.
In the top of the seventh, Ridenour reached on an error and then stole second. Mihelarakis doubled her home before she was brought around herself by another Winslow double. The Lady Tigers connected for their second home run in two innings but was not enough as Lauren Snead (Troutville, Va.) picked up the mound win, 5-3.
Snead fanned eight batters while allowing just thee hits. Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.) and Hannah Ellis (Keokee, Va.) had singles to aid the offense.

The Lady Cavs again scored in their first at bat. Mihelarakis sliced a double and would score on a Winslow single. The Lady Blue Raiders tied the contest, 1-1, in the home second on a solo home run.
Lindsey Wilson had a big outburst in the bottom of the third where it scored three times, two earned, to push ahead 4-1. UVa-Wise’s Cantone scored on an error to cut it to 4-2 but could get no closer.
UVa-Wise will travel to a third Mid-South Conference opponent on Tuesday in a 3:00 p.m. twinbill at the University of the Cumberlands.
