Lady Cavs Blow out Patriots After Being Shutout

Williamsburg, Ky. – After mounting just five hits in the opener, UVa-Wise blew out host University of the Cumberlands to take one of the two softball games Wednesday. The Patriots scored once in the first game for the 1-0 victory before the Lady Cavs’ run barrage in the 13-0 five inning win.

Britney Lawson (Duffield, Va.) and Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) had the big bats for UVa-Wise (12-10). Lawson belted a two-run home run and double as part of a three hit second game while Ridenour had two doubles in the opener and a single in the late game. Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.), Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.), Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) and Melanie Sutherland (Birchleaf, Va.) produced three singles apiece.

Megan McCoy (Va. Beach, Va.) fired a two-hitter for her first career shutout in the late game while Lauren Snead (Troutville, Va.) gave up just two hits with one scoring in the first game for the loss

Game 1

After a scoreless first five and a half innings, Cumberlands (11-13) produced the game’s lone run. Whitney Piar led off with a double and scored on a Brittany Turner single to go ahead 1-0.

UVa-Wise could not manage a run in its last trip to the plate. Ridenour had two doubles while Wilson Hannah Ellis (Keokee, Va.) and Frazier singled for the Lady Cavs offense.

Game 2

UVa-Wise wasted no time in breaking out the bats in the second contest. The visitors scored four times in each of the first three trips to the plate.

After Wilson drove in the first run in the top of the first, Lawson would later blast her sixth homer of the year, a two-run shot to wrap up the first four-run at bat.

The Lady Cavs doubled their score in the second with run-scoring hits by Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.), Wilson and Cantone singles along with a double from Lawson for an 8-0 tally.

UVa-Wise completed the rout in the third with four more scores and a single score in the fourth to make it 13-0. McCoy (3-2) had her best outing of the season with just two hits over five innings of work. 

The Lady Cavs return home for a pair of games Friday night, April 5 th against Pikeville College starting at 5:00 p.m. which they will honor the 2007 AAC and NAIA Region XII championship team.
