Newton Hot Hitting and Snead Pitching Powers UVa-Wise Softball Sweep

Wise, Va. – Shelley Newton had a near perfect day at the plate and Lauren Snead was as dominate on the mound in a UVa-Wise softball sweep of Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Tennessee Wesleyan. Newton lined five hits, a three-run homer and five rbi while Snead scattered five hits and one run in 11.2 innings as the Lady Cavs claimed 5-1 and 5-3 victories over the Lady Bulldogs.
Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) had three singles and two rbi in the opener before doubling and belting her fifth home run of the year, a three-run shot, in the last game for a five of six day for the Lady Cavs (14-10/8-2 AAC). Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.) connected for a deep two-run home run in the first game while Britney Lawson (Duffield, Va.) and Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) both added three singles. Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) doubled and singled and Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.) lined two hits.
Snead (Troutville, Va.) allowed just two hits, one earned run and fanned five in a complete game victory in the opener. The sophomore pitcher came on to shut the door on Tennessee Wesleyan (9-21/4-4 AAC) in the late game. She gave up just three singles over the final 4.2 innings for a second win to improve to 7-6.
Game 1
In the bottom of the third, Newton was hit by a pitch before scoring when Wilson drove a pitch deep to right center field for a two-run home run.
The game remained 2-0 until the home sixth. With the bases loaded, Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.) lofted a sac fly to center to score Holly Gilliam (Big Stone Gap, Va.), who pinch ran. Newton followed with a two-run single up the middle for a 5-0 score.
The Lady Bulldogs pushed across a single run in the top of the seventh on two walks and a wild pitch for the 5-1 final.
Game 2
Tennessee Wesleyan was able to score an unearned run in the top of the first without a hit. The Lady Bulldogs added a pair to its total in the third on a single hit and a sac fly to make it 3-0.
The Lady Cavs mounted its comeback in the bottom of the third. With two outs and two on, Newton tied the game with a three-run round-tripper to right field. More two out magic happened in the fourth, Frazier doubled to left center to plate both Cantone and Lawson, who both singled to start the frame, for a 5-3 tally.
Snead allowed two hits over the final three innings to complete the 5-3 comeback victory.
UVa-Wise will travel to Lees-McRae College for two games on Wednesday afternoon starting at 3:00 p.m.
