Milligan College, Tenn. – In a matchup of the Appalachian Athletic Conference top two softball teams, Saturday’s doubleheader decided nothing but to keep the two teams in a vitual deadlock. Host Milligan received a two-run homer by Jessica Blevins for a 3-2 win before Bobbi Mihelarakis’ run-scoring single in the fourth gave UVa-Wise a 3-2 second contest victory.
Britney Lawson (Duffield, Va.) lined three singles for three rbi for the Lady Cavs (17-13/9-3 AAC). Hannah Ellis (Keokee, Va.) doubled in each game while Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) had three hits. Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.) singled two times while Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.), Melanie Sutherland (Birchleaf, Va.) and Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) had one hit apiece.
Blevins was the main hitter for the Lady Buffs (22-15/8-2 AAC). She had the two-run homer in the first game and a rbi two-bagger in the late game.
Game 1
UVa-Wise broke onto the board with a pair of runs in the first. Newton and Wilson singled and moved up on a fielder’s choice. Lawson followed by driving in both runners on a single for a 2-0 lead.
Milligan answered with a single score in the second on a UVa-Wise error. The game remained 2-1 visitors until the home fifth when Blevins connected for a two-run homer. Lady Buffs’ starter Sidney Burns did not allow a tying run to the Lady Cavs over the final two frames for the 3-2 win.
Lauren Snead (Troutville, Va.) fanned six batters on the hill for UVa-Wise.
Game 2
For the second time, the Lady Cavs put some quick runs on the board. Ridenour singled, stole second and went home on a Newton single. A couple batters later, Lawson would drive home Newton on her own rbi single for its second 2-0 lead to start a game.
With two outs and one on by a walk, Blevins doubled home the runner to put Milligan on the board.
Leading 2-1, Ellis led off the top of the fourth with a double and moved to third on Sutherland’s single. Mihelarakis would drive in what would be the game-winner of Ellis on her own single for a 3-1 score.
The home two worked some two out magic again in the seventh. After a single, UVa-Wise was able to get two outs before Milligan singled home the runner to cut it to 3-2. Megan McCoy (Va. Beach, Va.) would not allow another score for a 3-2 UVa-Wise win.
McCoy struck out seven Milligan hitters and allowed just five hits to improve to 5-3 on the year.
UVa-Wise will continue its weekend swing with a road pair of games at Ferrum College starting at 2:00 p.m.
