UVa-Wise Splits Softball Twinbill at Pikeville

Pikeville, Ky. – With Mother Nature cooperating for one day, the UVa-Wise softball team earned a split at Pikeville Collge on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Bears captured a 4-1 opening victory before the Lady Cavs received four extra base hits between Shelley Newton and Britney Lawson to power to a 7-3 late game win.

UVa-Wise (2-2) saw Lawson (Duffield, Va.) continue her hot hitting with three hits including driving in two runs on a triple and home run in the second game. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) laced a pair of two-baggers while Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) singled in each game. Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, Tenn.) picked up her second win by going five strong innings.

Game 1

Pikeville (2-2) scored an unearned single run in the first and add three more tallies in the third for a 4-0 advantage.

In the top of the fifth, Candace Winslow (Chesapeake, Va.), Hannah Ellis (Keokee, Va.) and Frazier led off with singles before Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.) drew a walk to score Winslow. The single score was all UVa-Wise was able to push home to fall 4-1.

Game 2

After the Lady Bears posted one run in the bottom of the first, the Lady Cavs received the second home run in four games by Lawson to tie, 1-1, in the top of the second.

UVa-Wise secured its first lead of the day in the third when Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.) drove home Frazier, who singled, on a fielder’s choice. Newton doubled home Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.), who singled, before Lawson tripled in the final score for a 4-1 lead.

Pikeville cut into the difference with a pair of runs in the home fourth to make it 4-3. Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.) line a run-scoring single to plate Brittany Tunnell (Wise, Va.), who pinch ran for Newton following her double, in the sixth. Mihelarakis proved some security in the top of the seventh with a two-run double for what would be the 7-3 final score.

Ridenour posted two singles. Megan McCoy (Va. Beach, Va.) came into the circle in relief for both Lauren Snead (Troutville, Va.) and Wheeler Sims in each contest. McCoy picked up the save in game two firing a scoreless final two frames and went the final 3 1/3 in the first game.

UVa-Wise has postponed its Friday afternoon home date with Lees-McRae and will most likely have its Saturday doubleheader at Georgetown College bumped back to Monday, March 10 th.
