Ferrum, Va. – The UVa-Wise softball bats were hitting the ball all over the field in the opener with 17 hits in the opening victory, 12-1 in five innings. The Lady Cavs could not complete the sweep for the fifth time of the week as the Panthers of Ferrum College scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth for the 3-2 win.
On the day, Britney Lawson (Duffield, Va.) and Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) pounded out a combined eight hits and drove in six runs on the day. Lawson had a double and four rbi and Newton had a two-run single. Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.) laced a double as part of her three hits while Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.), Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.) and Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) singled three times apiece. Hannah Ellis (Keokee, Va.) lined a double and single.

Lauren Snead (Troutville, Va.) recorded another stellar pitching performance. The sophomore allowed just two hits on the day to hold Ferrum (15-21) to a single run.
UVa-Wise (18-14) saw Ridenour start the day with a single, stole second and scored on a Ferrum error. Newton and Wilson singled and both scored on a two-bagger by Lawson for a 3-0 advantage.
The Lady Cavs put away the contest when they lined six-straight singles including a two-run hit off Newton’s bat to plate seven runs in the top of the fourth. The visitors answered the Panthers one run with two more in the top of the fifth for what would be the 12-1 final in five frames.
Melanie Sutherland (Birchleaf, Va.) and Candace Winslow (Chesapeake, Va.) had one hit each.
Game 2
After a scoreless first inning, Cantone led off the second with a double. Three batters later, Ellis drove Cantone home with a sac fly. Frazier would follow to single home Lawson, who walked, for a 2-0 early lead.
Ferrum took advantage of UVa-Wise errors to score once in the home second and again in the bottom of the seventh to for an extra inning tied, 2-2.
The Lady Cavs failed to score in the eighth but the Panthers were able to take advantage of the international extra inning rule. Following a bunt to move the runner to third, Ferrum was able to single to push home the game-winner and 3-2 win.
UVa-Wise will now have a few days off until traveling to Bristol for an Appalachian Athletic Conference twinbill at King College on Wednesday starting at 3:00 p.m.
