Lady Cavs Powers Past Tornado

Bristol, Tenn. – UVa-Wise used eight extra base hits including two round-trippers to power past King College in both ends of an Appalachian Athletic Conference softball twinbill. The Lady Cavs’ Holly Gilliam sliced a key two-run triple for a 6-2 opening win before Candace Winslow and Britney Lawson belted two-run homers each for a 13-5 six frame late victory.
The doubleheader sweep keeps UVa-Wise (20-14) on top of the league standings at 11-3 where it remained tied with Milligan (8-2). King falls to 17-24 overall and 6-8 in the conference.
Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) accounted for three of the Lady Cavs’ eight extra base hits with a pair of doubles and a triple of her six hits. Lawson (Duffield, Va.) belted her eighth homer of the year, a two-run shot, and a double while Winslow (Chesapeake, Va.) connected for her first homer go with a single.
Gilliam (Big Stone Gap, Va.) and Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) had a triple and double to go with a single apiece. Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.) singled five times while Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.) and Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) had four singles each. Hannah Ellis (Keokee, Va.) rounded out the 30-hit day with three singles.
Game 1
Trailing 1-0 after three innings, Gilliam lined a two-run triple before Frazier singled her home for a three tally at bat to take a 3-1 advantage.
King pulled to within 3-2 with a single score in the home fourth. The game remained 3-2 until Newton doubled home Ridenour as part of a two run sixth. The visitors added a final run in the top of the seventh before Lauren Snead (Troutville, Va.) held King scoreless in the home last at bat for the 6-2 win.
Game 2
The Lady Cavs’ one run in the first was answered by two tallies from the Tornado to make it 2-1 after one complete.
In the second, Lawson started the biggest outburst of the day with a double. Wilson singled her home before Ridenour sliced a triple. Mihelarakis and Newton had back-to-back run-scoring singles. Winslow connected with her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, to complete the six-run outburst and 7-2 tally.
Leading 9-5, Lawson belted her own two-run home run in the top of the fourth before the Lady Cavs added two more scores in the sixth for a 13-5 score. Pitcher Megan McCoy (Va. Beach, Va.) fired three scoreless innings to complete the win in relief of Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, Tenn.).
UVa-Wise will have a day off before traveling to Emory & Henry for a Friday pair of games starting at 3:00 p.m.
