Emory, Va. – Three UVa-Wise softball pitchers allowed just eight hits and did not allow a run to shut out Emory & Henry College twice, 8-0 in five and 8-0, Friday afternoon.
The Lady Cavs (22-14) saw sophomore hurler Lauren Snead (Troutville, Va.) continue her strong late season. She fired a first game one-hitter, walked just one batter and fanned nine. Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, Tenn.) and Megan McCoy (Va. Beach, Va.) combined for a seven-hit shutout of the Wasps (9-21) in the late game as the duo did not walk a batter.
Candace Winslow (Chesapeake, Va.) connected for her second home run of the week, a two-run variety, and singled. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) laced three doubles and drove in two. Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) produced another productive date from the leadoff spot with two doubles, three singles, two runs and two rbi. Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) had her own double to go with three singles. Sarah Stone (Blountville, Tenn.) added the final extra base hit with a two-bagger in the late game.
Game 1
After two scoreless innings, Hannah Ellis (Keokee, Va.) walked and Holly Gilliam (Big Stone Gap, Va.) singled to start the visiting third. Frazier followed with a run-scoring single before Ridenour drove two runners home on a double for a 3-0 score. Newton reached on a fielder’s choice and would come home when Winslow belted a home run to complete the five-run inning.
In the fifth, Newton doubled and Frazier had a rbi double as part of a three-run at bat for what would be the 8-0 final in five innings.
Snead gave up just a second inning single and one walk in the five inning complete game shut out to improve to 11-8.
Game 2
UVa-Wise wasted no time to get on the board in the second contest. Ridenour singled, stole second and move to third on an error with Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.) at bat. Newton drove both runners home with a double before she would score on an Ellis hit to make it 3-0.
The visitors added single tallies in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth. In the seventh, UVa-Wise posted the final score when Stone doubled and scored on a Winslow hit to make it 8-0.
Ellis and Gilliam both singled in each game while Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.) had one hit in the opener.
UVa-Wise will play host to Covenant College starting at 1:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon for ‘Senior Day’ to honor four veteran team members.
