Game 2 Boxscore

Wise, Va. – Shelley Newton doubled and homered in the opener before Candace Winslow lofted a two-run single to right for the key offense in the UVa-Wise softball sweep of Covenant College in Appalachian Athletic Conference action, 6-4 and 5-1.

The doubleheader sweep keeps the Lady Cavs in first place in the AAC standings at 13-3. The team has also won its last six contests and nine of 11 to go to 24-14. Covenant stayed in third place at 8-6 and 12-23 overall.

Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) was one of four Lady Cavs senior to be honored between games but she provided the scoring punch in the opener. She lined a rbi double in the fourth and her fifth homer of the year, a solo shot, for an insurance tally. Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) slashed two triples and a single, scored three times and drove in three runs.

Winslow (Chesapeake, Va.) had a rbi single in the first before her two-run single in the late game propelled the team on top. Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) lined three hits and scored three times. Hannah Ellis (Keokee, Va.) doubled and single and Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.) doubled in a run. Melanie Sutherland (Birchleaf, Va.) had the other hit.

Game 1

Covenant busted onto the board when Kristen Walker hit a solo homer in the first. UVa-Wise scored one of its own in the home half of the inning. Ridenour singled, stole second and came home on Winslow’s single down the left field line.

The Lady Scots used the long-ball again in the fourth. With one on base, Kimi Peebles homered to left for a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Cavs had the answer again. Britney Lawson (Duffield, Va.) walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on a Frazier single. Ridenour tripled home Frazier to tie the game, 3-3. Mihelarakis and Newton posted back-to-back doubles to score two more for a 5-3 advantage.

Covenant pulled to within a single run in the sixth with an unearned run before Newton belted a solo homer to center field to make it 6-4. Megan McCoy (Va. Beach, Va.) shut down the visitors in the top of the seventh for her seventh win and 6-4 final score.

Game 2

Senior Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, Tenn.) had a solid outing on the mound on the day she was honored as well. She went all seven innings, did not allow an earned run, scattered five hits and walked one in the victory.

The Lady Scots scored for a second time to start the game with a 1-0 lead.

Trailing 1-0 in the third with two outs, Ridenour singled, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Mihelarakis walked and stole second. Both runners moved up with Ridenour scoring on a second wild pitch to tie the game, 1-1. Newton drew her own walked and moved to second on a passed ball. Winslow lofted the game-winner next to shallow right field to score both runners for a 3-1.

In the home fourth, Ellis and Frazier started the at bat with singles before Ridenour tripled home both to make it 5-1. Wheeler Sims allowed one hit in each of the last three Covenant trips to the plate but did not allow anyone to score to improve to 6-2.

UVa-Wise will complete its home schedule with a pair of games Tuesday afternoon starting at 4:00 p.m. against the University of the Cumberlands.
