Bristol, Tenn. – Virginia Intermont’s six-run first inning proved to be too much to overcome for UVa-Wise in the Appalachian Athletic Conference softball tournament. The Lady Cobras held off the late-charging Lady Cavs, 7-5.
UVa-Wise (25-16) will move into unfamiliar territory in the loser’s bracket. The team will face King College at 11:00 a.m. in what the Lady Cavs hopes is the first of three games on Thursday.
Maddi Ridenour, Britney Lawson and Sarah Frazier accounted for two singles apiece. Mary Wilson, Bobbi Mihelarakis and Holly Gilliam added one hit.
Leading off the game, Virginia Intermont (12-27) started with five-straight hits, two doubles to score six runs. The Lady Cobras added an unearned run in the top of the fourth to make it 7-0.
UVa-Wise mounted a fierce comeback over its final three trips to the plate. The squad took advantage of four Virginia Intermont errors in the fifth for three runs. The team added another run in the sixth off two more Lady Cobra miscues to make it 7-4.
In the home seventh, the Lady Cavs produced four hits but just one run and left the bases load as the final tally came to 7-5.
UVa-Wise left 12 runners on base and was unable to record an extra base hit.
