March 16, 2008
GAME 1 BOXSCORE

GAME 2 BOXSCORE

Wise, Va. – Shelley Newton blasted a grand slam while Britney Lawson and Mary Wilson added solo homers to power UVa-Wise to a softball split with Lees-McRae College. The Lady Bobcats took the opener, 5-2, before the Lady Cavs rallied for the 8-3 night cap.

Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) paced the Lady Cavs (3-3) at the plate with a four hits day including a triple. Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) smashed her second career grand slam in the late game and had a single in the second game. Lawson (Duffield, Va.) hit her third home run in six games while Wilson added her first in the same contest. Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.), who doubled, and Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) added two hits apiece.

Game 1

UVa-Wise pushed across a run in the home first when Ridenour led off with a single and came around to score on a Mihelarakis double.

Lees-McRae (13-11) tied the game in the top of the fourth before Salle’ Horner, who led off the fifth with a walk before stealing home on a double steal for a 2-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, Anna Carter hit a three-run homer to left center to open a 5-1 advantage.

Ridenour laced a tripled down the left field line in the home seventh to plate Frazier but was all UVa-Wise could manage to fall 5-2.

Game 2

After two scoreless frames, Frazier and Brittany Tunnell (Wise, Va.) singled and Ridenour loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice. Mihelarakis walked to score Frazier. Newton stepped to the plate and drove a deep ball over centerfield to complete a five-run inning.

The Lady Bobcats broke on the board with a single run in the fourth before Wilson and Lawson connected for solo round-trippers in the home fifth to make it 7-1. The visitors outscored the Lady Cavs 2-1 in the final two innings but was not enough to fall 8-3.

Amanda Wheeler Sims (Jonesborough, Tenn.) picked up her third win in as many starts on the mound.
