UVa-Wise’s Snead Fires Three-Hitter in Opener before VI’s Poredos Homers for Late Win

Wise, Va. – The Lady Cavs’ Lauren Snead mowed down 10 Lady Cobras in a three-hit shutout, 2-0, before Katie Poredos’ sixth inning home run proved to be enough to edge out a 6-5 late game victory for the Appalachian Athletic Conference softball split.
UVa-Wise (4-4/1-1 AAC) saw senior catcher Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) star at the plate. Newton had a double and single in the first game before having two homers and a single in the late game. Britney Lawson (Duffield, Va.) added three hits with a double. Candace Winslow (Chesapeake, Va.) and Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.) laced doubles.
Poredos doubled in game one and had the game-winning home run in the nightcap to pace Virginia Intermont (3-13/1-1 AAC). Haley Odle had a first game single and the late home run. Heather Odle had a double and single with two rbi in the second contest. Melissa Hudgins had two singles while Katie Poredos and Autumn Arney doubled.
Game 1
Snead (Troutville, Va.) had a dominating performance in the circle for UVa-Wise. The sophomore scattered three hits and walked three but fanned 10 in the three-hitter.
Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) singled home Lawson, who singled to lead off, for the first run in the second. Maddi Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) walked and stole second to start the third. She came around for the game’s only other run on a Newton doubled down the right field line to make it 2-0.
Game 2
The Lady Cobras broke onto the scoreboard with a single run the top of the third. Newton led off the home third with a home run to right center to tie the game. Lawson and Cantone both doubled to go in front 2-1.
The deficit did not last as Virginia Intermont received a two-out double to right center from Heather Odle to go back in front, 3-2. The visitors extended the margin to 5-2 when Haley Odle belted a two-run homer to left in the top of the fifth.
Newton struck again when she blasted her second leadoff home run of the contest to cut the difference to 5-3 in the home fifth.
After one out, Poredos drove the ball deep over the center field fence to give Virginia Intermont a three-run lead, 6-3.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh. Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.) reached on an error and Lawson singled to left. Winslow lined a rbi double to left field to score Wilson. Cantone ground out to third and Lawson beat the throw home to make it a 6-5 contest. VI starter Kristen Dyer retired the final two UVa-Wise hitters for the 6-5 victory.
The Lady Cavs will travel to NCAA DII University of Charleston on Wednesday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
